Durant undergoes surgery for ruptured Achilles

Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant confirmed that he suffered a ruptured Achilles in Monday’s loss to the Toronto Raptors in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. He made the announcement on his Instagram account Wednesday, adding that he had successful surgery.

“What’s good everybody I wanted to update you all: I did rupture my Achilles. Surgery was today and it was a success, EASY MONEY,” read the caption on a photo of Durant in a hospital bed.

Warriors general manager Bob Myers announced after Monday’s game that Durant injured his Achilles but said he wouldn’t know the severity of the injury until Durant’s MRI on Tuesday. League sources told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Adrian Wojnarowski that the team believed the MRI would confirm an Achilles tear. Durant flew to New York City to undergo the MRI, sources told ESPN.

Monday’s game was Durant’s first since injuring his calf on May 8 against the Houston Rockets in the Western Conference semifinals. He was initially ruled a game-time decision after going through Sunday’s practice and Monday’s shootaround, but Warriors coach Steve Kerr said before the game that Durant would play without any restrictions.

Durant scored 11 points in 12 minutes at the time of his injury in the second quarter.

“My road back starts now! I got my family and my loved ones by my side and we truly appreciate all the messages and support people have sent our way,” Durant said in the Instagram post. “Like I said Monday, I’m hurting deeply, but I’m OK. Basketball is my biggest love and I wanted to be out there that night because that’s what I do. I wanted to help my teammates on our quest for the three peat.

“Its just the way things go in this game and I’m proud that I gave it all I physically could, and I’m proud my brothers got the W. It’s going to be a journey but I’m built for this. I’m a hooper I know my brothers can get this Game 6, and I will be cheering with dub nation while they do it.”
