Mercer checks one of the main boxes for the Tigers entering the Winter Meetings: a veteran shortstop to stabilize their infield.

The 32-year-old, who spent his first seven big league seasons with the Pirates, hit .251/.315/.381 with six home runs and 39 RBIs in 117 games for Pittsburgh in 2018.

Detroit wasn’t going to rush to make a shortstop signing — with general manager Al Avila saying Tuesday that, “It’s not as important here in December, but we’ll have one in Spring Training, one way or another.” But the opportunity presented itself sooner than later.
